Wire EDM Machines

Fast Wire EDM for Metal Additive Manufacturing

Custom built in the USA to separate printed parts from their build plates, sized around your operation rather than a catalogue spec.

Every metal printed part comes off the printer fused to a build plate. Fast Wire EDM is a wire EDM machine designed for one job: separating those parts cleanly, without putting the part at risk.

The Application

Getting Printed Parts Off the Plate

Metal printed parts come off the printer fused to a build plate. Before any finishing can start, each part has to be separated from that plate. That step is often a bottleneck, and it is where a part that took days to print is most at risk.

Wire EDM separates the part from the plate without mechanical cutting force. The wire does not push on or vibrate the part, so the geometry you printed is the geometry you keep.

Fast Wire EDM is designed around this application. It is not a general purpose wire EDM machine adapted for build plates after the fact. EDM ZAP engineers each machine for build plate separation from the start.

Why EDM ZAP

Custom Built Around Your Operation, 100% in the USA

Machine Sizing

Built around the plates and parts you actually run, not a fixed catalogue configuration.

Cutting Requirements

Configured for your specific separation job rather than adapted from a general purpose machine.

Loading & Unloading

Designed to make heavy plates easier and safer to get in and out of the machine, which is where most operator time goes.

EDM ZAP designs, manufactures and assembles its equipment in Montgomery, Illinois, with over 50 years of EDM experience behind every machine.

FAQ

Fast Wire EDM Questions

Have a question we haven't answered? Talk to an engineer.

Why use wire EDM to separate printed parts from a build plate?

Wire EDM separates parts without mechanical cutting force, so the part is not pushed, bent or vibrated during removal. That matters on parts that represent days of print time and high material cost. It works on any electrically conductive metal, which covers the metals used in metal additive manufacturing.

How does wire EDM compare to a bandsaw for build plate separation?

A bandsaw removes parts by mechanical cutting, which applies force to both the part and the plate. Wire EDM cuts with electrical discharge, so the wire does not push on the part. For high-value or delicate printed parts, that removes a source of risk at the final step of the build.

What build plate sizes can you accommodate?

Each machine is sized to the plates you run. For reference, recent builds have handled build plates of approximately 28 x 28 in, part heights around 30 in and part weights around 4,400 lb. These are not maximum limits. Tell us your dimensions and we will build around them.

Which metals can you cut?

Fast Wire EDM cuts electrically conductive metals, which includes the metals commonly printed on laser powder bed fusion systems. Tell us the materials you print and our engineers will confirm the right configuration.

Can the machine be configured for our existing cell or floor layout?

Yes. Machine sizing, access, and loading and unloading are designed around your cell, your handling equipment and your workflow. Share your layout when you request a quote.

Is the machine made in the USA?

Yes. EDM ZAP designs, manufactures and assembles its equipment in Montgomery, Illinois, and has built EDM equipment for over 50 years.

How do we get a quote, and what information do you need?

Use the quote form on this page. Include your plate size, part height, part weight, material, printer platform, volume per week and timeline. An EDM ZAP engineer will review your requirements and follow up to discuss the configuration.
